Programs that send text messages from a computer are usually directed at businesses, but this one is also handy for home users. It’s a simple installation, and once in place, starts up with Windows and sits running in the Notification Area the whole time.

The program window looks abit like that of Outlook or Outlook Express. It displays message details in one pane, with the actual message below, and a series of folders to the side. It can import contacts from Outlook and other programs. You get a phone number so people can reply straight to it, but there’s no way to use your existing number, which is annoying.

A block of 100 messages costs £8, which works out at 8p each. For a block of 500, this drops to 7 p each a total of £35. This is cheaper than many mobile phone talk plans, but considering the cost of the program, it doesn’t look quite such good value. This is a handy way to send text messages, but only hardcore senders will find this cheaper overall.

Securus - A secure way to monitor internet access

The internet, it’s fair to say, houses its fair share of doggy material, and it can be hard to find a way to prevent children from accessing it. Securus is a monitoring system that keeps a close eye on the text of sites being viewed, rather than just images. If it sees contentious words it takes a screenshot. We tried and failed to use some of the usual tricks a technically savvy child might use to bypass parental control tools, and it is only possible to turn it off with access to the password.

One problem might be that it is impossible to uninstall without the password, and this can’t be retrieved if forgotten. So it might be worth making a note somewhere, although this could defeat the point. The default behavior notifies the user using a splash screen if it sees anything doggy, although this can be disabled for discreet monitoring. its even possible to make it shut down the offending application.

One possible snag is that the log file, which records the questionable content that a user has visited, only records Internet Explorer-visited sites, but the company is working on a Firefox-compatible version. However, it still makes a note of any doggy keywords it recognizes.

Acouple of minor qualms aside, Securus is a serious security tool and one that will no doubt appeal to any parent worried about what their children are getting up to online.

Nero PhotoShow Deluxe

There are three parts to Nero PhotoShow Deluxe. First, the management side deals with searching and categorising your collection of images, as well as editing them and touching them up. The editing options are easy to follow but limited in depth. That said, there’s enough here for most beginners, and editing isn’t really the point of PhotoShow Deluxe.

The Share section works with an online photo service called PhotoShow Circle. Users can automatically upload selected images for others to view and download. There’s also the facility for emailing them and for exporting them in other ways. Finally, the Make section is the interesting part, where users can create slideshows with music, screen savers and dynamic Desktops, in which your Desktop background changes after a certain amount of time.
